The Bioparco di Roma is a 17-hectares zoological garden located in the heart of Rome, on a part of the famous Villa Borghese Park. The Bioparco is among the largest and oldest Zoological Gardens in Italy: it was opened on 5 January 1911.
The Bioparco di Roma was designed by Carl Hagenbeck in the style of that in Hamburg: ditches and pits instead of bars, and generous green spaces. Various park expansions were undertaken in the following years; in 1935 the large aviary and the reptile house openend. After been completely renovated it was re-opened in 1983 with its main objective: to contribute to general public and school education on a broad range of environmental issues.
The concept of the Bioparco includes environmental education through the organization of exhibitions; conservation of endangered species, through participation in European Endangered Species breeding programmes (EEP) and scientific research aimed at increasing knowledge of the zoo’s animals and their wellbeing.
The Bioparco di Roma hosts more than 1.100 animals of 200 species coming from the 5 Continents.
There are many interesting areas to visit: the Large Aviary and the Reptile House, the bear valley and the lake area, the giraffe house and the indian elephants house. Your children will definitely enjoy strolling around while learning about animals and their environment.
The Bioparco offers families a rich and varied calendar of events all year round. On their visits to the Bioparco families have the chance to take part in a number of different activities such as interactive teaching labs; zoological and botanical guided. At weekends the Bioparco organises:
- Animal feeding, a unique chance to learn more about the animals and on other aspects connected with the natural environment and its conservation.
- A one-to-one meeting with the Children’s Farm.
- Entertainment with shows, workshops and games (from April to June).
